In a recently held webinar, ICEF Master's in Financial Economics faculty and graduates met with students and applicants to tell more about the programme and its international track, which is run by LSE. The graduates shared their stories and gave useful advice on how to succeed in business and civil service by making the most of the years at ICEF.

Why do international students choose HSE University, and what is it like to move to another country? Arslan Shakhnazarov, second-year undergraduate student at ICEF, shared his story and talked about how he, just an ordinary guy from Bukhara, Uzbekistan, chose a university on his own, passed the entrance test to HSE accidentally, found himself in the top 10 of the student ranking, started working at Tinkoff, and still hasn’t stopped dreaming big.

ICEF graduate Anna Dumitskayaa was awarded the Gaidar Fund’s first prize in the competition for the best graduation qualification work in economics in 2020 with her paper Experimental Study of Positive and Negative Incentives on Embezzlement. The second and third prizes were awarded to students of RANEPA, MSU and HSE. In the interview Anna told us why she chose such an unusual topic, what the benefits of winning the competition are and how to conduct research online.

HSE ICEF students annually are awarded prizes and commendation letters from the University of London for their academic achievements and internationally top-ranking exam scores in the international double degree programme. In addition, University of London faculty members note the high level of our students in comparison with other students from around the world.

In 2020, prospective students got a new experience: touring and getting to know universities remotely. After passing entrance exams online, many of them are now studying online and have yet to see HSE University in person. We asked Aiganym Daupbayeva, first-year student of the HSE and University of London Double Degree Programme in Economics from Kazakhstan about her experience attending HSE virtually. A springboard to careers in academia for many promising contestants, this year’s Student Research Paper Competition has announced as many as 13 winners – students and graduates of ICEF.

In assessing an employee’s performance, employers often listen to his immediate supervisor or colleagues, and these opinions can be highly subjective. Sergey Stepanov, an economist from HSE University, has shown that biased evaluations can actually benefit employers. An article substantiating this finding was published in the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization.
