ICEF Research Seminar by Frederic Vermeulen (KU Leuven)

On Thursday, June 7 at 4.40 pm, room 3402 (Shabolovka str. 26) ICEF held the Research Seminar.
Speaker: Frederic Vermeulen (KU Leuven)
Theme: "A new year, a new you? Heterogeneity and self-control in food purchases"

Venue: Shabolovka st., 26, room 3402

Abstract: We document that within-person (over time) variation in diet qualityis large and characterized by a steady decline over the calendar year. Wedevelop a two-selves model that provides a structural interpretation to thisvariation, in which food choices are a compromise between a healthy and anunhealthy self. We show that the data are consistent with this model usingrevealed preference methods. Around 25% of within-person fluctuations indiet quality are explained by variation in prices, budgets, advertising andweather conditions. The residual fluctuations are larger for individuals withlower stated self-control, lower income and younger people.
