Elena Velikaya presents at the 50th annual IATEFL conference
The 50th annual IATEFL conference took place in Birmingham, UK, from the 12th to the 16th of April 2016. ICEF’s English Language Programme Coordinator, Doctor of Sciences Elena V. Velikaya attended, and presented on the topic “Errors in academic speech: how relevant are they?” The presentation analysed students’ phonetic, lexical and grammatical mistakes. The results, outlined in a series of graphs, showed that despite the large amount of time devoted to developing presentation skills in English, the majority of students still make mistakes that are mainly phonetic and grammatical. This suggests that not enough attention is paid to the final English language exam.
The presentation sparked a lot of interest, and provoked questions from fellow colleagues hailing from all parts of the world.
IATEFL is the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language, and was founded in Britain in 1967. The main work of the Association is to develop links between organisations and specialists in the field of English language teaching.
