ICEF Research Seminar by Murat Kirdar (Bogazici University)

On Thursday, October 5 at 4.40 pm, room 3211 (Shabolovka str. 26) ICEF held the Research Seminar.
Speaker: Murat Kirdar (Bogazici University)
Theme: "Exchange Rate Shocks and Immigrants’ Saving Behavior" joint with Alpaslan Aslan, Slobodan Djajic and Alexandra Vinogradova

Abstract: This study examines how immigrants’ saving behavior responds to changes in the real exchange rate between the source and host countries. For this purpose, we first build a theoretical model of joint return migration and saving decisions of a temporary migrant, and then test the implications of this model using data from the German Socioeconomic Panel on immigrants from 103 different source countries. In accordance with the implications of the model, the empirical results show that immigrants’ savings increase in the real exchange rate and that the effect of the exchange rate on savings becomes stronger as years since migration increases.
