On November 17, SU-HSE was honoured by a visit of one of the most distinguished experts in economics and finance in the world, LSE Director Howard Davies. >>
Prior to being appointed LSE Director, Howard Davies was Chairman of the Financial Services Authority (the UK's single financial regulator since 1998). Also, he had previously served for two years as Deputy Governor of the Bank of England after three years as Director General of the Confederation of British industry. Since 2004, he is a member of the Morgan Stanley Board of Directors.*
During Mr. Davies' meeting with ICEF Director S. Yakovlev and the International Academic Committee, the results of almost twelve-year cooperation for creation and deevelopment of international educational and research programmes, including the double-degree BSc programme (joint with LSE) and the MSc programme in Financial Economics opened last year (also with support of LSE), were discussed. LSE Director expressed interest in ICEF students' achievements as well as in organization of management and financing at ICEF.
Then, Mr. Davies taught a seminar titled "The Future of International Financial Regulation" to the MSc students, during which a lively discussion arose, and the guest answered numerous sophisticated questions.
In addition, a brief meeting of H. Davies with SU-HSE Rector Y. Kouzminov, SU-HSE President A. Shokhin, ICEF Board of Trustees Chairman S. Dubinin and other HSE senior staff was organized. There, the parties discussed contemporary issues in development and cooperation of the two universities.
In the second half of the day, the SU-HSE Cultural Centre was severely overbooked with more than 800 people attending the "Credit Crunch and Its Consequnces" lecture read by Mr. Davies. This event was of great interest to students as well as to teachers, professors, researchers, financiers, and bankers.
Finally, on the hard day's night Howard Davies spoke at a grand meeting of LSE alumni (among whom there were the ICEF double-degree programme graduates) at the British embassy. Besides the alumni themselves, the event was attended by the deputy head of British Embassy in Russia Dr. Lorie Bristow, ICEF project Director at LSE Richard Jackman and the project's Senior Academic Advisor Amos Witztum, and representatives of ICEF and SU-HSE administration.
