The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to the global economic and financial systems. Whereas the global financial crisis of 2007 started as a liquidity crisis, the current pandemic has resulted in significant loss of income for most sectors of the economy while increasing overall indebtedness. Monetary policy alone is insufficient to support the economy, and policy makers have been looking to new tools and policies that can supplement the policies developed and tested in the 2007 crisis. This talk will cover:
- The magnitude of the economic and financial impact of COVID-19
- Policy initiatives
- Risks for the medium term
- Policy improvements and innovations for the future
Speaker:
Udara Peiris is a tenured Associate Professor of Finance at the International College of Economics and Finance of the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow. His research focuses on monetary policy, financial stability and international finance and has published in leading international journals including Economic Theory, Journal of Mathematical Economics, Journal of Financial Stability and Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control. He collaborates with researchers at central banks around the world including the Central Bank of Chile and Bank of Russia and has presented his research in universities and institutions around the world including the IMF, Bank of England and Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.
He completed his MSc with distinction and PhD in Financial Economics at the Said Business School and University College at the University of Oxford as a Clarendon Scholar. He completed his Bachelor of Commerce with Honours in Finance at the University of New South Wales.
