The residence of the British Ambassador hosted the graduation ceremony celebrating ICEF’s highest-performing members of the classes of 2020 and 2021. Congratulating the graduates, who were kindly welcomed by Ambassador Deborah Bronnert, were Nikita Anisimov, Rector of the Higher School of Economics, Alexander Shokhin, HSE President, and Sergey Yakovlev, Director at ICEF.

It has been a long-standing tradition for twenty years to celebrate the success of ICEF graduates at the residence of the British Ambassador. Last year, the event had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. This year’s restrictions limited it to a combined celebration of only highest-performing member of the classes of 2020-2021, who graduated with First Class Honours from the University of London (UoL) and honours degrees from the Higher School of Economics (HSE). Congratulation speeches delivered, the graduates moved to a more informal part of their celebration to use their opportunity to talk to guests, hosts and with each other.

Congratulating the classes of 2020 and 2021 were Sergey Yakovlev, Director at ICEF, Nikita Anisimov, Rector of the Higher School of Economics, and Alexander Shokhin, HSE President. In her welcome speech, British Ambassador Deborah Bronnert extended her best wishes of success, congratulating the Bachelor’s and Master's degree holders on earning two degrees from the two leading universities.

Ambassador Deborah Bronnert has particularly noted the importance of the double-degree programme as demonstrating the accomplishments that can be achieved by joining efforts towards stronger international cooperation in education. She further expressed confidence that the universities like ICEF will inspire more schools to engage in the experience, exchanging new achievements and better quality of training. The ambassador also observed that celebrating ICEF’s twenty-year anniversary milestone this year marks the fruitful nature of the cooperation between two universities.

ICEF Director Sergey Yakovlev expressed his admiration for the brilliant performance shown by the students. They studied for two degrees during the challenging years of the pandemic, and they coped excellently. “The classes of 2020 and 20201 have 400 Bachelor’s and 74 Master’s degree holders, while the total number of ICEF graduates now exceeds two thousand. But, quantity is not what we aspire in the first place. It is very important for us to have programmes that furnish each and every student with the knowledge and the skills that are crucial to careers in the economics of today,” said Sergey Yakovlev. He drew attention to the fact that ICEF graduates successfully enter the workplace and the Economics programmes offered by the best universities globally, including HSE. But, none of these achievements would have been possible without the consistent support from the Higher School of Economics and the cooperation project it had started with the University of London, that had led to the emergence of ICEF in 1997.

We rightfully believe that the Higher School of Economics stands as a symbol of the New Russia’s academic success. Similarly, ICEF can well be referred to as the symbol of the academic success of the Higher School of Economics. You, our graduates, are key to ICEF’s reputation as a well-established school. You are the pride of the New Russia’s education system and the embodiment of its prestige. We place much hope with you as you are the people who will make the difference.

Many of you are studying for your Master’s at the world’s most prominent universities. Many are employed by best-performing companies in Russia and abroad. In today’s world, research and education are the areas that offer opportunities for building bridges between nations. Our two countries, Russia and Great Britain, speak one language – the language of knowledge, research, and open dialogue. I hope that we continue to speak this language for even better collaboration success.

In his speech, Alexander Shokhin spoke about his personal engagement in creating ICEF, highlighting ICEF’s highly innovative nature as the first academic project of its kind in Russia. “We managed to convince our colleagues at the London School of Economics that our emerging cooperation would live up to their expectations, and it is my pleasure to see now that it has been able to do so for more than 20 years,” said the HSE President. Alexander Shokhin spoke for everybody in the Russian Association of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, which he has the honour to lead today, when he said how satisfied employers are with ICEF graduates. Not only do the graduates have the knowledge, they are proven specialists who pursue professional development and are willing to contribute to the field of analytics and applied economics.

The last to speak at the ceremony were the graduates. Speaking on behalf of Bachelor’s programme graduates were Stanislav Makarov and Daniil Tsinman. Members of the Class of 2020, they earned their Master's degree from London Business School. Stanislav entered the workplace in London, while Daniil has returned to Moscow and currently combines with career at an international company with lecturing at ICEF. The graduation speech on behalf of Master’s programme graduates was delivered by Andrey Krasavitsky.

The speaking graduates shared their individual stories of how ICEF has provided them excellent education and tools for the future. As a springboard to academic programmes abroad, ICEF opens many doors and it is up to students to choose which path to pursue.

“I’m sure what ICEF does really well is enabling us with the luxury of choice. We do have bankers and consultants in our community, but we also have designers, musicians, bakers, data scientists and so many other brilliant people. My most cherished learning outcome from ICEF is independence of thought,” said Daniil Tsinman. He also wished graduates to be able to pursue their boldest dreams and to follow their most unrealistic ideas – that’s exactly what sets them apart. “ICEF is an amazing kick start. But it is in our hands now to shape the future to be happy,” concluded Daniil.
